The maid
My maid came over to my place last night.
No, she's not the one who declared herself a maid. She's a real maid, hired through an agency and approved by Ministry of Manpower (MOM).
My dad had hired her to help look after me during my period of immobility, but by the time she arrived, I've already recovered to the extent that I can walk without crutches. Her arrival is more of relieving my mum of her housework.
Although this is the first time my family had a maid, I've had interacted with the maids of my other relatives before, so I had a rough idea of what to expect. Having a maid is not as simple as it seems. It's not like once you have a maid, you start living like a king.
Before MOM approved my application to hire a maid, I had to pass some foreign domestic worker course for employers, but passing the test is a piece of cake. I had to take a series of tests which I completed in 10 minutes and scored full marks for it. Basically anyone with common sense can do it as well.
Having maid means having to orientate her to her new surroundings and teaching her what needs to be done and how to do it. All these takes time, but my dad only intended to hire her for 2 months since the estimated time of my recovery is 2 months. I guess by the time she's fully orientated and used to our requirements, her contract would have ended.
Nonetheless, it's still something to experience in my life.
Speaking of maids, I'm suddenly reminded of the song 男佣 by 吴克群 (hey, Windows Chinese dictionary actually stores his name, I'm so impressed). The tune is quite cute, but the lyrics are even more cute. I must admit it reflects very well on reality.
