Oddballs

Just when I thought NUS has run out of oddballs to bump into, there came 2 during my final year. Both are in the same FYP lab as me. Thankfully I have a high tolerance for eccentricity

Oddball 1: Has a habit of saying "I'm full", and then carry on eating as though he was starved for days. True example: He ate more than everyone else at a buffet after having a heavy lunch.

Oddball 2: Has a habit of saying "I'm broke", and then shop as though money drops onto him from the sky. True example: He bought a Nikon COOLPIX 3700 (which costs S$399 according to the current market rate) after claiming he was broke from buying MP3 player.

And who are these 2? I shall not mention any names. Not difficult to guess considering there's only 6 final year students in my lab. But I'll gladly tell for a free treat

Holidays

Definition: Holidays are days on which a student does not have any lessons nor exams (having to do FYP is a separate issue - one can choose to do work on a holiday).

Times have changed from the primary and secondary level education whereby holidays are fixed terms shown on the academic calendar. In tertiary level education, there are days during the school term when some do not have lessons at all. Those are also considered holidays.

In other words, holidays are no longer fixed, and their duration and frequency depends on the modules chosen.

In NUS however, holidays can be declared as and when the appropriate authority wishes (for example, Engine Day). Today, a new holiday was declared. But who on earth would need a holiday on 31st December?!

NUS holidays are only meant for their staff. This information is only disseminated to students to let them know when not to look for the staff.....

------------------------------------------------------------------

Tried to look for literature for my FYP for the upteenth time this sem, and failed miserably for the upteenth time again. How can I possibly find something in half a year, that someone couldn't find in 1 and a half years (that makes 3 TIMES as long) ?

I decided to change my area of search from the conventional databases (Compendex, INSPEC, Science Direct, Web of Science) to search engines like (Christmas is coming!).

Guess what I found? Recipes for pig spine soup , and even a blog entry talking about pig spine soup!!!

Can I claim frustration? Someone please advise me.....

My project is on biomechanics of spine, and I'm trying to look for papers written by researchers who have done compressions tests on a singe vertebral body (rear processes sawn off). I need to look at their compression test protocols as well as their results as a means of literature review. The spine specimen I'm using currently is a pig spine, so researchers who use pig spines as well would be more relevant to me.

Do you happen to know where I can find such papers? If you do, please let me know. I'd be very grateful. Thank you.

The trip to KL

My apologies for finishing this blog came more than a week late. To make a super-duper long blog as short as possible, I'll only be writing out the more interesting events in detail. But it's still very long, so read at your own leisure.

The trip was organised by 1 of Karen's cousins, Josephine, as a family outing. They wanted to get enough people to book a whole coach to ourselves, so Karen asked us (her year 2 classmates) along. There were 17 of us altogether (not enough for a whole coach, but no one else wanted to go). Of the 17, 3 were Karen's friends (Bryan, Yap and me).

I'm sure many are puzzled as to why the 3 of us joined Karen's family outing. Actually, it's not the 1st time we did so. We've been to Genting Highlands with her family last year (together with a few other classmates as well). That was the 1st time we went out with her family and we found out that her family members are very easy to get along with. Karen's mom and aunties were not those typical aunties that you see everywhere in Singapore. They're very humurous people with a sense of adventure and are quite young at heart. This trait must have rubbed off their children, for Karen, her sisters and her cousins are similar in this aspect.

The other reason why I wanted to go for this trip is because I hardly get to hang out with Bryan and Yap. Although we're all in ME and NUS cycling sub-club, we hardly go out because of differences in schedules and cliques.

############################################

The Palace of the Golden Horses

Thus named because its main theme was horses - horse statues and sculptures, horse head figurines in the most unimagineable places (pillars, arm rests of chairs), hoof-shaped furniture legs, horse-shoe patterned carpets, and places named "Derby", "Stable", etc. Luckily they didn't expect their customers to eat out of troughs like horses as well.

There is a small sign just outside the entrance of the hotel saying something like: "Customers are requested not to wear slippers, shorts, singlets (etc etc etc informal wear) to maintain the atmosphere of the hotel". Too bad, this wasn't shown when the contract was formed.

Only 2 out of 7 rooms (2 to 1 room) were ready when we arrived. How can anyone claim to be a 6-star hotel, when they give excuses like "The previous customers checked out of the rooms only 1 hour ago"???

Karen fell in love with the place more and more as she explored the place. She claims that the building and its surroundings are very spacious, unlike those in Singapore, and that gives her a feeling of freedom. What beats me is why she loves shopping when she hates crowds and crowded places.

############################################

The Mines

I have absolutely no idea why they named the resort, shopping centre and theme park next to the Palace of the Golden Horses this. The resort looks nice, kind of like the higher end resorts I came across in Pulau Tioman because it has a man-made lake beside it and man-made beach ni front of the chalets. Wakeboarding services are provided on the lake (is that drool coming out from Erin's and Jeremy's mouth?).

The shopping centre is rather boring, because it sells mainly food and souvenirs. The theme park is not much better, except for one part, the "Snow House". It's a place with ice sculptures and other things made out of ice blocks, like slides and arm chairs. The place is probably around -20 degree Celcius. In fact, I could see vapour escaping from my mouth when I talk.

Sitting on the ice constructs while waiting for our photos to be taken is really a pain in the ass. And it makes you wet too. The vapour from our breaths make the camera lens fog

############################################

Getting around in KL

The only mode of transport out of my hotel is taxi, because The Palace of the Golden Horses is at the outskirts of KL. No monorail (their equivalent of our MRT) or buses go to the hotel. The hotel does have its own taxis for hire as well. We rented the hotel taxis to go to Berjaya Times Square. The charge per taxi was RM 25. The hotel taxi was quite interesting in design, because the passenger seat beside the driver was replaced by a space for luggage, and there were 2 rows of seat in the rear facing each other. Of course that means I have a problem squeezing in with my friends. The aircon on the taxi was practically non-existence, which means 5 of us (there were 5 in my taxi) were enjoying a little sauna on prior to shopping.

After walking around Berjaya Times Square, we proceeded on to Sungei Wang. Although the 2 shopping centres were rather close to each other, we took the monorail (for 1 stop) because it was raining. KL's monorail is our equivalent of the MRT, but it's very much smaller. More comparable to the LRT I think. It only had 2 carriages, but it's roof was so low my hair could touch it when I stand upright. So much for having fresh air up there. The monorail is always packed, as though KL has 24 hours of peak hours. Once is enough, no more monorail rides for me.

############################################

Foot Reflexology Heaven

"Malaysia, truly Asia" is the slogan used by Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board (does this department name sound familiar?). If the capital of a country is supposed to reflect its country best, then I guess Asia should be very well known for foot reflexology. Foot reflexology centres are abundant every where in KL. No matter where you go, you can see a foot reflexology signboard. They even have centres operated by the blind.

Anyway, Karen was quite excited about trying out the cheap cheap full body massages available there. The cheapest one in Sungei Wang costs RM 45 and lasts for 1 hour. There were also other choices, such as "head, shoulders and back", "foot reflexology only (of course)", etc. I decided to take my chance and try the full body massage, since my legs were tired from the long hours of shopping.

Hey, the massage is not the indecent kind. And it is being carried out by a blind man.

Anyway, my advice to everyone is: do not go for cheap full body massages! The masseur doesn't know how to massage the correct places. Worse of all, he's a big set man who uses his body weight to exert force when he massages. You can never imagine the pain. He spent about 40 minutes massaging my legs (I didn't even tell him my legs are tired!!), 5 minutes on my arms (why on earth would anyone need their arms massaged??), 1 minute massaging my head (and ruining my nicely gel-ed hair), 2 minutes on my abdominals (is he trying to kill me??), and 5 minutes on my neck and shoulders (and these happen to be the most important areas...). I can do a much better job than this guy can.

I came out of the centre feeling worse than before. Sharon (Karen's 2nd younger sis) said I looked as though I was going to die. She's almost correct.

Family Day

Just 2 occasions in 1 day that made this day very different from the rest.

1. My cousin is getting married!!
This cousin of mine is just 1 year older than me. She's had the pleasure of bullying with me when I was still a cry-baby at the tender age of 7. Of course, the pleasure ended when she had to tilt her head up to look at me.

My cousin and her family went around sending invitations today. When I saw her, all I could do was to keep shaking her hand. I don't know what to say, except the customary congratulations. I'm reaching the stage in life where the people around me are starting to settle down. And my mom naturally didn't let by the chance of asking me "When is your turn?".

I don't even have a girlfriend yet. Seesh. Well, maybe 1 day if I could.....argh, I'm dreaming again.

2. Dinner with my uncle and aunt.
These are different relatives from the above. They live in Chestnut Drive, which is rather close to me, and our families have dinner together every once in a while. My abovementioned cousin lives in Petir Road, which is even closer, but our families don't eat together except during Chinese New Year. I do hang out with my cousin sometimes (always to go KTV, heh heh) and that's about it. Dinner was at a restaurant in Geylang Bahru that specialises in fish head delicacies. My dad absolutely loves fish head (curry). I absolutely can't understand why.

We ordered other dishes among fish head curry, 1 of which is spare ribs. The spare ribs were very nicely done, the meat very succulent and sweet. However, the rib bones reminded me of my FYP. Biting the flesh off the ribs somehow resembled de-fleshing the pig spines in my lab, with my teeth instead of a scapel this time. And the exposed trabecular bone on the cut ribs brought back wonderful memories of the CT images Jeremy and Kuan Ming always play with on the workstations. Everyone tried to ply me with more ribs, but I couldn't bring myself to eat them anymore, no matter how tasty they were. Another side effect of doing too much FYP.

I haven't blogged for the last 2 days, and someone misses me already

Despite telling ourselves that we will not play too much , Christopher and I played more and more each time we met up for weekly sessions. There seems to be more and more people utilising the LAN facilities for . Just last week, we discovered that someone else has installed version 1.17 (we were playing with version 1.14 previously).

More fellow monster killers are surfacing in the Faculty of Engineering. Last night, when Christopher and I were playing with a few of his secondary school friends, there was this Indian guy who approached us, asking if he could join our game. Too bad for him, there was something wrong with the connection and we couldn't play with him. He went off to join his 2 other Indian friends' game.

Maybe we can exchange a few pointers next time

Part time Malaysian

Yesterday was the 2nd time I crossed the Straits of Johore during the holidays. Only that time, my friends went over to JB to celebrate Cheryl's birthday. Finally, after 2 consecutive years of celebrating her birthday at Sentosa, we decided to make some radical changes - from south to north.

We took 170 from Kranji MRT at 11.30 am yesterday. The traffic to JB was very light, but the queue at the Malaysian customs checkpoint was really a bottleneck. Everything was quite fast until we reached their checkpoint. We had to wait or about 45 minutes before it was our turns to get our passports stamped. Worse of all, the customs officer tried to chat all of us up. Delays and more delays.

At JB, we had dim sum lunch at City Square, walked around the building (but didn't buy anything because most of the things there can be found in Singapore and cost about the same) and watched the movie, Ocean's Twelve. The movies there cost RM10 at most, and the interior of the cinema has a higher standard of comfort than all that the cinemas in Singapore has to offer. There's so much leg space even I could slide forward in my seat and lean my head on the back rest. I shall go City Square to watch movies from now on

--------------------------------------------------------------
Sidetrack: Movie review

Ocean's Twelve is definitely nowhere as good as it's prequel, no doubt it has equally funky moves. The show assumes that've you've watched Ocean's Eleven and knows its story by heart, hence it lacks the character build-up (which is 1 of the good things about Ocean's Eleven). The cinematography is more akin to the European style than before, in the sense that the camera seems more ShAkY (according to Christopher, ShAkY filming is prevalent in European movies). I almost had a headache watching it.

The action in Ocean's Twelve is much less as compared to Ocean's Eleven. In other words, more boring. I only had 2 hours of sleep the previous night and was very tempted to fall asleep there and then.

Another thing: Brad Pitt doesn't look good in super short hair.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Post dinner activity was dinner at Sri Tebrau Taman's hawker (it's just 1 long row of stalls under the same roof, which, according to Loo, is owned by 1 person.) The prices of most things in JB is about the same as that in Singapore. This hawker is no exception either. There were 6 of us altogether and we spent RM 83 on dinner with about 6 dishes. The only pull factor to eating in JB is that we get to eat things not found in Singapore, like the butter-fried crayfish.

Sleep is what I need

I'm staring at my literature review and Solidworks drawings (and now my blog entry) with half-closed eyes. I think the only thing I can manage decently with the amount of RAM and processing speed left in me at this point in time, is to suan Fengchun. But that's because I don't even need any brains to do so. Hmmm.....no count then. I'm not doing anything constructive at all. I need sleep. I don't even dare to cut the pig spine today because I'm afraid I'll cut my fingers instead. The long long blog entry shall come much later when I've rested enough.

Thinking of food.....or food for thought?

I slept at 4 am and woke up at 10 am today - 6 hours of sleep after a tough battle and a route march. I almost forgot I had to go to school today, because all of my FYP equipment were moved to DSO (Faculty of Science). Everything was already set up and I went there mainly to familiarise myself with the place once more, and to see the experimental procedure (which has changed numerous times since I started on this project).

When I reached the building, I bumped into my supervisor, Prof Teoh.He immediately recognised me and asked, "Are you looking for Jeremy? He's on the 4th floor doing scanning. I'm going to get some medicine and I'll be back later." I only nodded to his question and went to the security counter to change my IC for a visitor pass. It came as a rather big surprise that Prof Teoh conversed so nicely with me. Maybe I stereotyped lecturers in NUS a little too much.

The room where my equipment was held, smelt worse than the last time I went inside.

"It must be the spine, the silicon rubber and the PBS (phosphate buffer solution)." said Jeremy.

Explanation: PBS is used to keep the spine moist, so as to imitate the conditions experienced by a living spine as closely as possible.

I was tempted on several occasions to buy a face mask, especially today. I was trying out a software that takes load/time readings directly from a load cell, and had to sit with the goat spine (extracted for about 1 year now) less than half a metre away from my nose. The stench given off by the rotten spine had never been so terrible before. To top it all, I couldn't figure out how the software works and spent 3 hours working with the stinking spine. Just when I thought I would be spared from further nausea after yesterday's spine de-fleshing. No wonder I didn't feel hungry at 6.30 pm (FYI, I my stomach normally starts rumbling at 5.30 pm).

Prof Teoh came into the room a little while after I started trying out the software. He didn't pay much attention to me, for his main concern was the CT images of the bones. Jeremy and Kuan Ming had been fiddling with the CT-scanner since late morning, but somehow the images had some problems for the later scans. The 3 of them sat in front of the workstations trying to figure out what was wrong. All this while, I concentrated on figuring out the software, but fatigue had set in. My eyes were slowly losing their focus and my processor speed declined rapidly. The only thing my brain could register is that THE SPINE STINKS.

It was only when Prof Teoh was about to leave, did he turn to look at me, and asked, "What is that you're doing?"

"I'm familiarising myself with the load cell, and trying to find out how to obtain readings from it."

"Alright, you shall keep playing with this." He patted my shoulder, took the medicine that he brought into the room with him earlier and turned to Jeremy, "I'm leaving now. Bye."

"Bye." I mumbled after him. I was still quite unused to talking with Prof Teoh. Oh well, I shall work on it next time. Jeremy and Kuan Ming decided to go for a well deserved tea break. There was a staff lounge at level 8 of DSO. The place was decked with comfy chairs and sofas of various shapes and had a TV (a rather small one, don't ask me the size, I was too tired to notice). It was also furnished with a pantry that has a vending machine (which sells drinks for only 20 cents a cup!!) , a pool table (that requires 50 cents per game!!) in 1 corner. The walls of the room were entirely made of glass, offering a panoramic view of the Faculty of Science and other buildings across AYE. It is quite a good place to relax actually.

We did a scan of the spine before we left. It was getting late and I realised I had not started packing my things for the KL trip tomorrow. The scan required some time to complete, but I was too tired to worry about not having enough time to pack. Anyway, I don't need much time to pack.

In fact, it's 10.47 pm now and I'm still blogging and chatting with my friends. I think I'd better bathe now.....

I spent the later half of the day butchering away, or rather, de-fleshing 2 pig spines. And I spent the earlier half of the night fighting monsters so that the rest of the world could sleep in peace

Kok Kin, Chris and I battled monsters from 7 pm to 11.30 pm. We have never fought so hard before. Must be our commendable sense of duty. 6 major battles, each lasting up to half an hour, took place in the cluster (with the music from Y.E.S 933 playing in the background, courtesy of another user). Armies were quickly raised. Frontal clashes took place often, although sneak attacks on enemy bases were preferred, resulting in either side of the war fleeing. Tides of battle turned from side to side, back and forth endlessly. Eventually, the monster killers were victorious (as always).

When the war finally ended, the bus service back home ended as well. Only then did Chris and I realise that SMRT bus services end much earlier than SBS services. Just our luck to be staying in an area that is served by only SMRT buses.

After the long and tiring battle, we had to do a route march to get back home. We took a bus to Jurong East and started walking home from there. It was about 12.40 am then. Along the way, Chris was constantly webbed by spiders. Apparently, some of the monsters who managed to escape were laying in ambush for the monster killers to avenge their fallen comrades.

Their incessant ensnaring really pissed Chris off.

So he grabbed a huge stick and swung it madly in front of him as he walked.

Despite our fatigue, the harassment from the spider webs did not delay our journey home. I managed to reach home at around 2.40 am.

Next time, I shall leave promptly at 11 pm.

Once again u proved my saying - There's no place in Singapore that you can't travel to solely by foot.

I like the way u illustrate ur story of chris with WC3 pictures. Very cute and funny haha. :)

The idea of playing LAN games in school is to save money. This purpose would be defeated if we were to take cab home with midnight charges, hence the route march.

Actually, we're just a couple of crazy people.

New personal record

I sang for 5 hours in KBox with only 1 other person, for $21!!

No no, the record is not the cost, it's the fact that I can sing for 5 hours with only 1 other person.

This is where I see myself 1 year down the road

I think there'll be a few others following this path as well, heh heh.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Been having lots of ideas for outings and also had some discussions with my friends about them. But I wonder how many of them will actually be carried out. Let's make a list and see:

VSW gang:
  • KTV
  • Kayaking

Huimin (and whoever else she's calling along):
  • Curry puff fest
  • KTV

Lemonattackers:
  • Cheryl's birthday celebration (this outing will definitely come to light)

NUSSDU:
  • Mahjong
  • Christmas meal
  • Weekly badminton

Monster Killer Club:
  • Weekly sessions

JC ex-classmates:
  • Gathering
  • Badminton

PPCDL coursemates:
  • Dinner
  • Boating

That makes a total of 13 plans so far. Shall revise my checklist at the end of the holidays.

Yeah!! Latest ambition update is to be a beta tester! Hee hee.

Demon: Sherry told me that she's always the one organising the outings. All of you must have been bullying her all these while.....nevermind, I shall go to her rescue =P

There are 5 final year ME students who are doing their FYP under Prof Teoh in VSW. 4 of them are slackers, 1 of them is rather hardworking. Personally, I believe the hardworking student is so because she has a very high stress concentration factor (SCF).

Explanation: SCF is depends on shape or physical design, such as corners and holes. If a certain location on an object has SCF 2, the point will experience twice the actual stress exerted on it.

The hardworking student has a SCF of about 5 (i.e. if you give her 1 term paper, she would behave as though she has 5 term papers, which is a lot). Hence, she would be very pressurised to complete whatever work is assigned to her.

However, pigs have evolved to be able to fly, the moon became tainted with blue by all the astronauts who landed on it, and the sky fell down because of what man had done to upset nature. The most hardworking student of VSW didn't turn up for FYP right after her last paper. She even told her co-supervisor that she would not be coming back next week either.

What on earth am I doing in my FYP lab.....

        Friends

Friends have been a very important part of my life ever since I was enlisted into SAF. Yes, it took me 18 long years to realise the importance of friends. Friends are the people that you may need to depend heavily upon when you step out of your home. They are also the people you turn to when you can't rely on your family.

Many of my friends have remarked, some time or another, that I have an exceptionally wide social circle in NUS. The cirlce doesn't just consist of my former school mates and the company mates I had during NS. In fact, about 50% of them were made after I entered NUS. These people are actually my friends' OG friends, former school mate, camp mates, etc.

I was often asked, "How do you make friends so easily?". To that, I return this question, "What's so difficult about making friends?" The only difficulty I find, is the very first step of starting a conversation. Subsequently, all you have to do is to keep in touch and that's about it. After a certain period of time, if you find that the other party is someone you can get along with pretty well, you'll hang out more with him or her and become closer friends.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------

I got to know 'A' and 'B' during year 1 because they were from my friend's OG group, and we were in the same lecture group. They were part of a rather close knit sub-group within their OG, primarily because they were also in the same lecture group. I managed to blend in with their little gang easily because they were all rather friendly.

We used to hang out quite a lot during year 1, since our time tables were quite similar. We would always celebrate one another's birthday by secretly buying presents and planning surprises and such. However, B's attendance for our outings gradually decreased. Everyone has their own commitments, and I suppose B has other friends she needs to spend time with. This naturally put the rest of B's gang off. By year 2, most of them were already not expecting B to turn up for outings at all. Most of all, A was very displeased with her.

We're all in our final year now. Things, if they have changed, have only changed for the worse. A's birthday is coming soon, and we were trying to find a day when everyone in the gang could meet up for a celebration outing. As A's birthday came very soon after the exams, we decided to have a belated celebration. B has a camp on the week right after A's birthday, while the rest of the gang were able to make it. I decided to push the celebration day back to accomodate B.

In the midst of discussing when to have the outing, I heard that A don't care if B is included in the outing anymore.

"Her presence does not make a difference to me.", says A. These words really caused a great sadness to overwhelm to me. To me, B is someone who doesn't really know how to show her appreciation for friends. At least not to this gang. It doesn't mean she does not appreciate us. Then again, I'm not too sure if my view of B is correct. Whatever the case, I still feel that there's no need to condemn B to the extent of finding B's presence as unnecessary.

As the saying goes, "one hand cannot clap soundly.." I guess friendship or any relationships need both parties to put in effort to maintain..

I get p***ed off too when one of my old friends keeps on churning out silly excuses to avoid outings... maybe I cared about about her presence that's why it irritates me when she doesnt put in the least effort to try to turn up for juz one outing.. I guess that's how A may be feeling bah...

On the other hand, I do not go for outings if I do not feel comfortable with the company.. that's why we've gotta reflect.. maybe it's the group that's making the person uncomfortable? hmm...

        *brain dead*

B wasn't churning out silly excuses.....but she churns out a lot of last minute excuse though. And as far as I know, B does not feel uncomfortable when she hangs out with us. Maybe I wasn't sensitive enough.

I'm just very sad that things have to end up this way.

Thinking again.....but it's not food this time

It's been 7 days after my last paper for this sem. I've spent almost all my time enjoying myself, or rotting away at home. Which is quite typical for people whose holidays have just started. According to popular belief.

I turn to my friends in EE. Most of them are busy preparing for their CA2 presentations, which lie on these 2 weeks. I turn my peers in ME. Some of them are still having exams and are still busy studying (but of course, there're always a few exceptions). Others who have finished their exams are resuming their FYP. The same goes for my pals in CE. When I turn to Chris, the tenacity he displays when he kills monsters put me to shame (ermmm.....wait, what's there to be ashamed about?).

For the past 2 days, I've been waking up at 9+ in the morning, and reaching school at 12 noon. It's the holidays now, but I don't feel too good about slacking. I guess some of my friends will say I've been thinking too much again. I seem to be thinking too much this sem. Wonder what's gone wrong with me.....

I lost 2 kg over the sem. And someone remarked that I've grown skinnier. Did thinking too much cause this to happen, or have I been thinking too much again?
