Food for thought.....or thinking of food?

Nothing profound. Nothing philisophical. Just food. Lots and lots of food.

Thinking of food.....or food for thought?

I slept at 4 am and woke up at 10 am today - 6 hours of sleep after a tough battle and a route march. I almost forgot I had to go to school today, because all of my FYP equipment were moved to DSO (Faculty of Science). Everything was already set up and I went there mainly to familiarise myself with the place once more, and to see the experimental procedure (which has changed numerous times since I started on this project).

When I reached the building, I bumped into my supervisor, Prof Teoh.He immediately recognised me and asked, "Are you looking for Jeremy? He's on the 4th floor doing scanning. I'm going to get some medicine and I'll be back later." I only nodded to his question and went to the security counter to change my IC for a visitor pass. It came as a rather big surprise that Prof Teoh conversed so nicely with me. Maybe I stereotyped lecturers in NUS a little too much.

The room where my equipment was held, smelt worse than the last time I went inside.

"It must be the spine, the silicon rubber and the PBS (phosphate buffer solution)." said Jeremy.

Explanation: PBS is used to keep the spine moist, so as to imitate the conditions experienced by a living spine as closely as possible.

I was tempted on several occasions to buy a face mask, especially today. I was trying out a software that takes load/time readings directly from a load cell, and had to sit with the goat spine (extracted for about 1 year now) less than half a metre away from my nose. The stench given off by the rotten spine had never been so terrible before. To top it all, I couldn't figure out how the software works and spent 3 hours working with the stinking spine. Just when I thought I would be spared from further nausea after yesterday's spine de-fleshing. No wonder I didn't feel hungry at 6.30 pm (FYI, I my stomach normally starts rumbling at 5.30 pm).

Prof Teoh came into the room a little while after I started trying out the software. He didn't pay much attention to me, for his main concern was the CT images of the bones. Jeremy and Kuan Ming had been fiddling with the CT-scanner since late morning, but somehow the images had some problems for the later scans. The 3 of them sat in front of the workstations trying to figure out what was wrong. All this while, I concentrated on figuring out the software, but fatigue had set in. My eyes were slowly losing their focus and my processor speed declined rapidly. The only thing my brain could register is that THE SPINE STINKS.

It was only when Prof Teoh was about to leave, did he turn to look at me, and asked, "What is that you're doing?"

"I'm familiarising myself with the load cell, and trying to find out how to obtain readings from it."

"Alright, you shall keep playing with this." He patted my shoulder, took the medicine that he brought into the room with him earlier and turned to Jeremy, "I'm leaving now. Bye."

"Bye." I mumbled after him. I was still quite unused to talking with Prof Teoh. Oh well, I shall work on it next time. Jeremy and Kuan Ming decided to go for a well deserved tea break. There was a staff lounge at level 8 of DSO. The place was decked with comfy chairs and sofas of various shapes and had a TV (a rather small one, don't ask me the size, I was too tired to notice). It was also furnished with a pantry that has a vending machine (which sells drinks for only 20 cents a cup!!) , a pool table (that requires 50 cents per game!!) in 1 corner. The walls of the room were entirely made of glass, offering a panoramic view of the Faculty of Science and other buildings across AYE. It is quite a good place to relax actually.

We did a scan of the spine before we left. It was getting late and I realised I had not started packing my things for the KL trip tomorrow. The scan required some time to complete, but I was too tired to worry about not having enough time to pack. Anyway, I don't need much time to pack.

In fact, it's 10.47 pm now and I'm still blogging and chatting with my friends. I think I'd better bathe now.....

I was sent to KL for MAINTENANCE, i.e. went there to work, not play.....no time to buy any presents. So sorry to disappoint everyone.

How about an even longer blog entry than this on what I did in KL for a present? =)
