Food for thought.....or thinking of food?

Nothing profound. Nothing philisophical. Just food. Lots and lots of food.

Food Review

Seems like it was only yesterday when I last did my food review. Oh yes, it was indeed only yesterday when I last did a food review. Alright, my current life is centred all around food. But as the Chinese saying goes, "It is (good) fortune to be able to eat (good food)". Let's just say I've been pampering myself a little lately.

I've eaten soft-shell crab 4 times, since the start of the year 2005. It's only the 3rd week of the year, so that makes 4 times in 3 weeks. Maybe I'm trying to find out what is the amount of cholestrol I can take before my health starts to deteriorate. Maybe I'm loaded with money but have nowhere to spend it. These are not of concern here. Today, we just talk about soft-shell crab.

Soft-shell crab, as far as I'm concerned, is the only shelled-seafood that one can happily consume without going through the hassle of having de-shell it. Even the eyes of the crab enter the digestive system with the rest of its body. It is served deep fried, mostly in places selling Japanese food, but of late, more and more restaurants (Japanese or not) are including this item in their menu. I'll be looking into various aspects of this delicacy sold at the 4 different venues where I tried them.

1. Sakae Sushi
Cost: $6.90
Serving: 2-3 pax. The cucumber shreds that come along with it are just garnishings. Can be eaten with soya sauce or wasabi provided.
Nicely fried, not too oily, reasonable value for money.

2. Nooch Bar
Cost: $10.00
Serving: 2-3 pax. Nothing but crap.....I mean crab.
Comes with a special sweet sauce.
Tastes too salty for my liking. A little too oily but there's paper placed beneath the crab to absorb excess oil. Quite costly too.

3. Jap food stall at NUS science canteen
Cost: $5.00
Serving: 1. It's a main course that comes with rice, potato cubes mixed with a little mayonnaise, miso soup, a slice of watermelon and a cup of green tea.
There's also all-you-can-take-mayonnaise to go along with your soft-shell crab.
It's simply cruel beyond words to separate mayonnaise from soft-shell crab. Very cheap, since it's located in NUS. Guaranteed to satify.

4. Cafe Cartel
Cost: $16.70
Serving 1. Like the Jap food stall above, this is a main course. Comes with 'fries' (I forgot what they name those pieces of fried potato made to look like waffles) adn deep fried prawns. Mayonnaise, chilli sauce and ketchup available.
The 1st thing I noticed when my meal was served, was that I could pour the oil from the crab off my plate. Quite tasteless, little meat comparatively, and as "does not look like crab to me" (quoted from a fellow diner). Maybe soft-shell crabs are best eaten at places selling only Jap food.

Why am I blogging this when I should be sleeping? HR tutorial at 9 am tomorrow, and I only slept for 5 and a half hours the night before. On top of it, I'm supposed to be the 1st to do individual presentation for tutorial tomorrow. Pity I can't talk about soft-shell crab.

Just finished my HR individual presentation today. Christopher said I seemed very nervous. Didn't prepare anything to talk about, everything I said came out from my mind at the very last minute. The good things is, I kept to the 3 minute timing well, hee hee hee.

Me slack?!?! Hey, I burnt my past weekend doing FYP so that I can go ktv with YOU and HCl on Monday and celebrate Sherry's birthday on Wednesday. Don't know who's the one slacking around here.....
